CAN ART Fair 2025 - A unified tribute to Ibiza
This presentation brings together the work of Jean Willi, Gelbell, and Karimah Hassan, three artists whose practices have been shaped by Ibiza in different ways. Together, these works present a multi-generational and international dialogue that explores how different artists respond to the same ground, each translating the island through their own language, context, mediums, history, and spirit.
Jean Willi, a Swiss-born painter and writer, has called northern Ibiza home since 1975, drawn there by chance and held by its quiet magic. Rooted in the island!s peaceful, untamed north, his work reflects a deep connection to the landscape, solitude, and shifting spirit of Ibiza. While the island has evolved, Willi remains grounded in its original soul, creating abstract, instinct-driven art that resists explanation and embraces mystery. For over five decades, Ibiza has been both refuge and inspiration, shaping his creative journey as he continues to quietly observe, paint, and write from his sanctuary in Santa Inés.
Secondly, Gelbell, an artist duo from Melbourne, developed their most recent body of work during a residency in San Antonio. Their collaborative paintings capture figures in motion and moments of everyday life. With expressive, layered surfaces, their work reflects a contemporary engagement with Ibiza!s culture and nature.
Alma Berrow!s ceramic sculptures add a tactile, intimate dimension to the booth, evoking Ibiza!s hedonistic rituals and their lingering traces. Through her ironic relics of social life, she captures the island!s spirit in its most ephemeral and human form, bridging memory, material, and myth.
Finally, Karimah Hassan!s large-scale abstract paintings were created during a winter residency in Dalt Vila. Her work draws from her heritage and background in architecture, merging personal memory with sensory impressions of Ibiza!s light, energy, and environment. This recent series marks a shift toward deeper abstraction and larger scale for her.
Together, these works create a vibrant, multi-generational and international conversation that embraces the many sides to Ibiza. Instead of offering a fixed narrative, the booth becomes a living map of artistic responses to the Island - each piece reflects a unique encounter with Ibiza!s landscape, energy, and mythology.
