The Space In Between: Expression and Interpretation

Written by Mara Mooyman

There is a certain distance between what we feel and what we are capable of expressing, between what exists within us and the ways we find to make it visible.

The creative act is, in some way, an attempt to shorten that distance.

Art comes from a need to express.
Sometimes, from the need to communicate something one is aware of; other times, from the attempt to give shape to something one cannot fully comprehend.

Artists turn to image, word, sound, matter or movement to transform an inner experience into a tangible form that can exist outside of themselves. However, a finished artwork is only the visible part of a much broader process. Behind it lie unseen decisions, transformations, impulses, thoughts, doubts and emotions that perhaps even its creator is unable to name.

Not even the artist's own words can fully reconstruct the creative process from which their work emerged. Even though an explanation can provide context and bring us closer to certain dimensions of the artwork, it will never be able to reflect the totality of the creative experience that brought it to life.

When an artwork comes into contact with the gaze of others, its meaning ceases to depend solely on the artist's intention, and it begins to exist beyond their control.

The audience, without having full access to everything that has given life to the artwork, encounters its material form and builds a relationship with it based on their own experiences and sensibilities. Through their own vision they may find something in it that the artist never intended to express, or find in it a meaning that can only exist in the encounter with a stranger's eyes.

Whatever the viewer recognizes, feels or understands will be shaped by their own way of existing in the world.

Those who long to express themselves must learn to live with the fact that they will never be able to determine how the depth of what they carry within themselves is interpreted.

The artist must accept that what they have tried to express may reach others in a different way, but this does not mean that their intention becomes unimportant, rather it creates a space between what is intended to be expressed and what may actually be perceived.

And for me, that is where art finds its meaning and value.

In that space of infinite possibilities that can only arise through the encounter between different perspectives.

Because perhaps the value of a creation does not lie solely in whether it manages to faithfully transmit what it is intended to express, but in everything it may generate beyond that.

ESP
