Lawrie Hutcheon

Lawrie Hutcheon is a self-taught artist exploring semi-abstract interpretations of metaphysical themes, with a focus on time, space, and scale. His interest in cognitive neuroscience informs how he considers perception and guides his development of techniques that evoke both thought and emotion.

After years of sculpting hand-built and wheel-thrown ceramic forms, Hutcheon has shifted to two-dimensional work, embracing a vivid colour palette in place of the muted tones of stoneware glazes. Elements of his earlier asymmetric ceramics still influence his paintings and occasionally inspire the design of his custom polygonal frames.

Dividing his time between a studio on the North Yorkshire Coast and another in London, Hutcheon draws on these contrasting environments to enrich his practice. His recent works are a study of colour and its dynamic relationships, bringing together structure, intuition, and a refined sense of form.
