White Island forms part of a series called I Found Myself Washed Up on the Shore - a body of work made by Zoë during a time of rebuilding and reflection.
This piece is named after Ibiza, which is not only visually magnetic but literally magnetic. Ibiza has long been a place of magnetic pull, both figuratively and, some say, literally. Es Vedrà, the rocky island off its coast, is surrounded by myth and often described as one of the most magnetic spots on Earth. While that isn’t exactly backed by science, there are stories of compasses spinning near its cliffs, of animals refusing to go near it, and of strange signals interrupting aircraft systems nearby.
This form came from that idea, something extraterrestrial, or ancient, or both. A relic that landed or emerged.
